Hi Reader,
Today, we’re sharing a look behind the development curtain at one of the next games to come from Karma Games. And make sure to read all the way to the end for links to where Juma gets some internet air-time.
🏗️ New In Development!
Last month, we teased a little bit about new projects we have in development. We’d like to share a little bit more about one of them: Wildscape! 🌿
Wildscape was brought to us by Sebastian Bleasdale (known from Keyflower). He had a game called Zoo Roundel at the time, and it was the roundel mechanic that grabbed our attention.🌟 But honestly, we were less than excited about the zoo part of the idea. Thematically, you went about collecting animals for your zoo, but the feeling of keeping captive animals wasn’t something we wanted to build a game around. 😿 But what makes development great is that anything can change for the better. We agreed to re-work the setting and push the mechanics thematically to make it a fully open nature setting about growth and restoration. 🌱
In Wildscape, you start with a land that was overdeveloped by industry and hit hard by the harsh changes in climate. It’s natural resources are used up with nothing left for native animals to live on. It’s dry, lifeless, and barren.
Throughout the course of the game, you bring it back to life. 🌳
In a nutshell, you’ll create expansive natural spaces of different terrains—a true wildscape. You’ll reintroduce a variety of different species that are specifically native to those terrains 🦒🦍, and restore the whole ecosystem to something that will thrive on its own.
In a great life-becomes-art moment, while we were in development on Wildscape, we came across a 2014 short documentary called “Forest Man” about someone who has done exactly what Wildscape asks you to do. You will be inspired by what one individual dedicated to nature can accomplish.
🎨 Fantastic Art
When it came time to find an illustrator we sought out acclaimed board game artist Miguel Coimbra (known from 7 Wonders, Cyclades, Small World). And today, it’s our pleasure to share with you at look at the Wildscape box cover art.
Miguel is also working on the game-component illustrations. Notably, all the terrain tiles in the game are going to look gorgeous! Sorry we’re not ready to show those, yet,🙈 but you will get a look at them in an upcoming newsletter.
💻 It’s On The Geek
There’s now a BoardGameGeek page you can check out that we will update as we go along. Feel free to drop us questions there in the forums. And you can subscribe on the page if you want to be notified when we post announcements and stuff.
🎙️ Interview (in German)
Last month, I was invited for a 1-hour interview with the podcasters of Board Game Theory. Hear about how Karma Games got its start, and of course, discussion about future projects (spoiler alert… it’s not just Wildscape).
If you’re interested Reader you can find it on their website or on Spotify. Please note, the interview is in German.
Thank you for your support in letting us make great games for you. We’re looking forward to sharing much more in the months to come!
